Shape One-handler with lid
Shape_description Lid: Short button knob, with flat band, beveled interior edge, and slightly convex top, curving smoothly to a nearly flat underside that smoothly joins a short, slightly concave stem, that again smoothly joins a flat, tapering smoothly to a short vertical rim, rounded at both edges. The underside is hollowed under the knob. One-handler: shallow bowl with a short nearly vertical flange, rounded at the lip, straight but tapering walls curving into a convex lower portion then a very short stem, on a rounded disk foot, with a flat resting surface, beveled on the interior, and slightly convex on the underside. A single, recurved horizontal handle, round in section, rises above the rim.

Decoration Lid reserved except for beveled interior of knob top, exterior surface of knob and stem, top of lid, where knob is attached, which is encircled by a black line, then a floral band, comprised of alternating 3 11-petal palmettes with 3 5-petal palmettes (or lotuses), then a black band on the vertical surface of the rim. One-handler glazed on the interior, handle, zone between handle attachments, lower part of body (below handle attachment, and ring foot except for reserved resting surface. The upper part of the body is also decorated with vertically arranged zigzags, while the underside is decorated with a 'bull's eye', that is, a central black dot, surrounded by a small black ring.
Inscriptions
Condition Lid: complete and intact, with slight chips to rim; surface inside and out marred with small white deposits, dark stains, and scratches and chips. One-handler: intact and complete except for a chip missing from the lower part of the exterior body, just to the right of the handle. Black-glaze pitted and scratched on interior, with slight white deposits.

Attribution Ure (BSA 1960) identifies this vase as from the same workshop (and probably same hand) as Chalcis 938 (deep handleless bowl).
